OHS Weekly Sports Recap

The boys’ soccer team and the cross-country runners were very successful this week for Olympia High School sports. On Tuesday, the soccer team won 6-2 at Blue Ridge highlighted by George Martin’s 5 assists, Jace Whitted’s 4 goals, and 11 saves by Elijah Smith! On Thursday, the guys picked up a shutout win. Again, goalie Elijah Smith performed very well earning a clean sheet by allowing no goals.

On the cross-country course, both the girls and boys teams dominated against Peoria Richwoods Tuesday. Top runners for this meet included Abby Litwiller, Anna Bieber, Chrystal Cornwell, Anthony Ragland, Owen Dare, and Logan Demling. Friday afternoon, the boys’ team picked up another cross country meet win. The girls’ team also finished in 2nd place. All the runners for both girls and guys set personal or season-best times.

Earlier in the week, JV football earned a big win at home against Rantoul winning 52-6. The coaches were pleased to see the kids’ hard work and dedication pay off with a win as the underclass program continues to improve and prepare them for varsity play. The varsity football game Friday night pitted the Spartans against new conference member Paxton-Buckley-Loda. PBL’s winning traditions showed early with a quick stop of the Olympia offense and a couple of scores lead by some big plays. The Spartans showed some resolve with a sustained scoring drive lead by their running game to score their only touchdown before the end of the first half. They couldn’t get much going in the second half against PBL’s stout defense and more big plays from their offense lead to the 38-8 win for PBL.

In other sports this week, Clayton Barnes earned first place at the golf match with a score of 42. The boys’ golf team won this Tuesday’s meet against Heyworth and Ridgeview, scoring only 196 points. Girls swimming had their first meets this week against some strong swimming programs. All levels of volleyball also competed against tough teams this week. The Spartans are struggling to get a strong lineup together to compete at the highest level. A varsity volleyball tournament this weekend will hopefully help the team bounce back from their rough start to the season. Conference play starts Tuesday.
