OHS Weekly Sports Recap

Monday afternoon, Olympia High School sports got started with a record-breaking girls soccer match at Macomb. The girls got the win 3-0 over Macomb and Ida Neumann tallied her fourth total hat trick on the year, while also becoming the new record holder for goals in a single season. Assists in the match came from Andi Ewalt and Amy Dederich, and Isabelle Forrest was in the net with a shutout.

Monday also brought the Spartans baseball and softball teams to Tolono to face off against the Unity Rockets. Starting with baseball, the Spartans battled hard but could not hold on for the win. A big sixth inning for Unity boosted them to a 9-5 win over Olympia.

In softball, Olympia lost another close game 5-4. Kennedy Smith had a double and a home run in the late rally attempt from the Spartans. Chloe Scroggins also had two hits on the day, but the Spartans fell just short of an incredible comeback.

On Tuesday, the Spartans baseball and softball teams travelled to Pontiac, for two Illini Prairie Conference matchups. Starting with the softball game, Olympia bounces back after their loss on Monday, and comes away with a 2-0 victory over the Indians. Freshman Danika Frazier pitched for the Spartans only allowing three hits and striking out seven.

In the baseball game, the Spartans came out hot on offense, winning the game 14-11. Olympia had one bad inning on defense, where they allowed nine runs in one inning, but aside from that the Spartans bounced back well from their loss on Monday. Senior Ryan Clienmark had a great day at the plate, going 5-5 with two doubles and a triple.

The girls soccer team also had a match on Tuesday, travelling to Central Catholic. The Spartans took a tough loss 7-0 to the Saints. When they started the game, the girls only had 11 players available and played some of the game with only 10 players due to injury. The girls are hoping to get back healthy for their match on Thursday.

After an off day for Olympia’s sports on Wednesday, the rain would not stay away long enough for baseball and softball to get their games in at home against Pontiac. Although the baseball and softball games were cancelled, girls soccer was fortunate enough to be able to play on Thursday. They travelled to Monticello for a conference match against the Sages. The Spartans battled hard, but fell just short, losing the match 5-4. Senior Jax Springer said, “We played really well and I’m proud of the team.”
