OHS Weekly Sports Recap

On Tuesday, Olympia High School’s sports kicked off with a home soccer match against rival Central Catholic. The Saints of Central Catholic came in as the top team in the Illini Prairie Conference on Tuesday, having a great season so far. The Spartans were hoping they could make a big statement win and knock them off, but Central Catholic held strong winning the match 9-2. The Spartans will be ready to get back on the field on Thursday at Tolono Unity.

Tuesday night brought Olympia’s volleyball team to Pontiac to face off in a rematch of what was a great three set game won by the Spartans, the last time these teams faced each other. This game also brought a fair share of drama, again needing all three sets to determine the winner. The Spartans eventually fell to Pontiac in the third set after putting up a strong fight.

Thursday afternoon, the Spartan’s soccer team traveled to Tolono to take on the Rockets. Olympia put together a great team performance to come away with a 5-2 victory over Tolono Unity. Scorers in the game included senior Justin Siebert, with a hat trick, Jace Whitted and Gannon Willie both had one a piece. Andrew Carroll, Jace Whitted, Noah While, and Justin Siebert all with assists.

Thursday night, the Olympia Spartan volleyball team went up against the Hawks of Prairie Central. Another hard fought game that went into three sets was the result on Thursday, with the Spartans coming out on top. Seniors Bella Dickhut and Kaitlin Dean had fourteen and twelve kills. The Spartans put together one of their most impressive performances of the season. Senior Chloe Scroggins told me after the game, “I’m really happy with the way we played as a team. It felt really good to put together a great game like we did tonight.”

Friday afternoon, the Olympia soccer team took the field for their final home game of the season, against the Tolono Unity Rockets. They came out on top yet again with a 7-1 victory. Senior Justin Siebet scored four goals on the day, with Dylan Smith, Jace Whitted, and Gannon Willie also getting on the board. Gannon Willie and Noah While both with two assists a piece. The Spartans have been playing very well later in the week and the scores have definitely shown it.

Friday night, the Spartan football team also had their final home game of the season against the 4-0 Sages of Monticello. With COVID and injuries leaving several Spartans off the field, there was just too much adversity for the team to overcome against a really good opponent. The Sages took the victory by a final score of 42-12. Two Olympia touchdowns came from Ethan Davis and Hayden Stork.
